Crimes Against Humanity Demand Justice

Thanks to industrialization and advanced technology, the 20th century was marked by an increase in the sophistication of war and in the ability to inflict death on a mass scale.  However, alongside the increased death tolls from state-sponsored atrocities came international cooperation to hold war criminals and human rights violators accountable for their crimes.  Thus, the 20th century, in which the word genocide was created and the word Holocaust became part of the common lexicon, also introduced the world to war crimes tribunals, truth and reconciliation commissions and war reparations.
